A few months after her passing, Lina Morgana’s mother, Yana, allowed a relative to put a message on her late daughter’s Myspace page. It read “in loving memory.” Tough words for any relative to write about a loved one. It was also a difficult read for those of us who were fans. The message detailed that Yana only had one request: she wanted people to enjoy her daughter’s music and share it with others. She wanted Lina’s dream to finally come true.
I think about Lina a lot, and I am a fan for life. I will certainly do my part to listen and share the music in order to keep her dream alive.
I recently published a song review for one of her tracks entitled “Buddy.” It is one of my favorite songs, but I like many others in her catalogue as well. I would like to direct your attention to a song called “Innocent.”
“Innocent” features a steady electric guitar mixed with drum machine, creating a stellar pop/rock sound. When you listen to the song, you may notice that you have heard the drum machine elements before. It has the same elements as those present on her friend Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.”
Lina’s songwriting is incredible. She asserts a beautiful idea in “Innocent.” The song describes how humans were created in a heavenly location and were tasked with the responsibility of taking care of the earth. Humans fell from their celestial location unto the earth where they are to use their beauty and expression in ways that take care of the world. This is one of the most beautiful concepts I’ve ever heard, and the way she sings the narrative is equally as touching.
The lyrics describe mankind as being innocent. We are good. We are designed to bring goodness to the world.
Lyrics
Lay it down in the dirt with me
Close your eyes, tell me what you see
We have fallen, fallen to the earth
Can you see this for what it’s worth?
Imagine lying in the grass or dirt and looking into the sky. You will notice the clouds. You might notice the earth’s rotation as the day or night environment spins. Imagine that there is something beyond. A place where we are really from. A wonderful space where we derive in goodness and peace. Your eyes will be able to track the distance from this place unto the earth. The point in space and time is where Lina is painting her lyrical picture.
Fall down to the world then we forget we cannot see
The truth and what really matters
When we touch, I forget all this
When we breathe, I can feel it shift
I go down, down, then let go
Feel the craving in my soul
Sometimes we forget who we are and what we’re called to do. When the senses take over, it is easy to get caught up in the immediate emotions present in life. However, Lina has a longing to aspire to fulfill her destiny in her soul and be the person she was designed to be.
I won’t apologize for feeling this alive
It’s more than twist of fate, that I am in this place
Innocent, innocent
I fall down to my knees and bless a thousand things
A prayer for every light turns into an alibi
Innocent, innocent
Being who you are should exist outside of what others think about you. It is not simply by chance that we are who we are. A higher power has given us a special spark that we showcase each time we do something to achieve the ultimate purpose of life.
Vocals
Lina is known for having a strong voice, but it is her softness that takes center stage in “Innocent.” Her vocals are soothing, yet poignant, which make them extremely influential.
Instrumentation
Rob Fusari asserts an excellent collaboration of electric guitar with drum machine.
Performance
“Innocent” is an unreleased track that Lina may not have had the opportunity to perform live.
