The 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards honored television’s leading productions, including some historic wins from Viola Davis, Jon Hamm, “Game of Thrones” and “Veep”.
Some television and film critics predicted more wins from studios whose productions stream through popular services and apps; however, the traditional networks received most of the night’s honors. HBO won Outstanding Drama Series (Game of Thrones), Comedy Series ( Veep)-as well as an award for writing, and acting for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale.
Amazon’s “Transparent” won an honor for directing for Jill Soloway and acting award for Jeffrey Tambor-who dedicated the win to the transgender community: “Thank you for your patience, thank you for your courage, thank you for your stories, thank you for your inspiration, thank you for letting us be part of the change. God bless you.”
HBO’s “Olive Kitteridge” won Outstanding Limited Series; Frances McDormand received an acting award for the production: “We’re all here because of the power of the stories that need to be told. Sometimes that’s enough. Thank you.”
“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” received several awards for its final season, including honors for writing and directing: “To everyone on television, cling to it as long as you can…I’ve been off of television for six weeks…this is the first applause I’ve heard.”
After a string of nominations since the beginning of the production, Jon Hamm received the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the last season of “Mad Men”.
Viola Davis became the first African-American to win Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “How to Get Away with Murder”. The actress shared a quote from Harriet Tubman in her acceptance speech: “In my dreams and visions, I seemed to see a line, and on the other side of that line were green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white ladies, who stretched out their arms to me over the line, but I couldn’t reach them no-how.” The actress compared the words to the plight of performers of color in an entertainment world with few opportunities to play leading roles: “Let me tell you something: the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there,” she added, acknowledging actresses who helped cross the line including Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union and Taraji P. Henson.
Regina King received Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for “American Crime”; Allison Janney of CBS’ “Mom” received Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
At the end of the ceremony former “30 Rock” star Tracy Morgan made an onstage appearance, the first since a highway accident which left him with brain damage a year ago. After receiving a standing ovation the actor delivered a gracious comedic speech.
