Out of all the great characters in the Marvel Universe, the X-Men seem to hold a special place in the hearts of producers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the last couple decades, Marvel films have done extremely well at the box office. Aside from the Avengers, the X-Men films always do quite well. Now that the Avengers: Endgame dominated the box office and became successful on video streaming services and platforms like Google Play TV and Movies, Marvel is now looking for the next big thing. It seems that those in the studio have decided that now is a good time to revisit the past and reboot some of the content that has made them so successful over the years.
It has been confirmed that Marvel Studios is developing a new X-Men film through the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a reboot currently referred to as The Mutants. This announcement is a bit of a surprise because the studio has been having so much success with new feature films like Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Due to its success on Disney+, Marvel Studios is expanding its universe to television shows WandaVision and Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
It has also been confirmed that Marvel Studios will continue to create content on the Avengers characters. They are in early talks about which characters to focus on and what type of films would they like to produce. Should they go the traditional route of an action/adventure film? Or since they own the rights to the most popular comic book characters in the world, create something that has more similarities with its plot from the literary works? There are so many different directions that Marvel could take and all of which would likely produce another blockbuster film.
We do not know very much information about The Mutants yet. Marvel Studios has announced that the company CCO Kevin Feige will be producing the film. Unfortunately at this moment we do not know who will be directing, acting or writing for this project. We do know that The Mutants will probably change its title several times before it is completed and ready for release.
There is a bit of controversy with the title of the new movie. Marvel Studios has let on that the project is predominately focused on the X-Men. However, some of the workers at the studio believe that term “X-Men” is outdated and that other Marvel characters will likely make an appearance in the new film so it would need a more inclusive name. The change in name has been spearheaded by Victoria Alonso, EVP of Production.
While her suggestion is valid, it is important to remember that the majority of the patrons for the new film will either be Millennials or members of Generation Z. Using the term “X-Men” for Millennials will bring back nostalgia of all the great comics and the incredible cartoon show from the 90s; the term would also introduce viewers from Generation Z to characters they may have never seen before. It’s easy to advocate for it to be released as an X-Men title, but there is still a long way to go with the production and the fans will figure out the final title probably sometime later this year.
