Talent runs in the family!
Erykah Badu’s daughter Puma Curry can sang! The 17-year-old regularly posts covers of her favorite songs on social media and we’re standing.
This past fall, she covered “Green Eyes”, a song originally performed by Erykah Badu and featured on the singer’s sophomore album record Mama’s Gun. It tells a three-part story of a relationship while also being a timeline of jazz music. Curry’s clip of her rendition has over 200,000 views on TikTok alone.
“We talk candidly about every single thing,” Badu told ESSENCE of her relationship with her daughter. “We talk about how … She says, ‘Mom, I’m you and I can tell that I’m you, but I have you to help me through it.’”
“It’s like this amazing thing, this understanding that we have,” she added. “I treat her as if she’s me, and she treats me as if I’m here. We just have an immense amount of empathy, and sympathy, and camaraderie, and balance, and understanding for each other. She’s a young woman moving into her teens and I’m a 45-year-old woman moving into my wisdom, and we just teach each other as we go.”
