Joining me today to answer my #ThreeTwoOne quick-fire questions about her latest novel Just One Weekend is author Catherine Aitken. I really enjoyed Catherine’s debut novel The Liberation of Bella McCaa but couldn’t fit this one in. So I’m pleased that Catherine is going to tell us a bit about the new book today.
Tell me THREE things about your latest book
It’s a very romantic comedy that starts in Dundee (my home city) but soon flies off to the busy, bustling madness of New York City and Brooklyn.
The story explores the moment when you realise that your life hasn’t turned out as you’d expected and asks the question – can you really change your life in just one weekend?
I loved doing the research for this book. It’s my second novel and so different from my first which was all set in Dundee. I had a whirlwind weekend in New York creating the journey of the characters. It was intoxicating, and exhausting! I’m hoping that I’ve captured the excitement and energy of the trip in the book and readers will enjoy being with the characters in that fabulous location.
Tell me about TWO of the characters in your book
Sandy, is a 47-year-old control freak. As soon as she lands in New York her meticulously planned itinerary starts to unravel. Separated from her best friend, and her husband, she’s left to her own devices in a strange city for the first time in her life – and she doesn’t take it well.
Jake, 50, has been living as a hermit, having removed himself from his rock n’ roll world ten years prior. Now he’s back, under some duress, and has to find a way to navigate through the unfamiliar world he finds himself in.
Tell me ONE good reason why people should read your book!
Because it’s a rollicking roller coaster ride of a romantic comedy!
Full Book Details
A woman in need of change; a reclusive, broken rock star and the city that never sleeps. What could possibly go wrong?
Sandy wants adventure. Bored waiting for her husband to give up work so they can travel the world, she jets off to New York with best friend, Isobel, chasing a slice of their youthful dreams at a reunion concert for The Brig – the pop group they fangirled over long past the age they should’ve known better.
But her meticulous sightseeing plans unravel when Isobel’s virtual boyfriend makes a surprise appearance and Sandy is saddled with an inebriated passenger who had made her transatlantic flight a misery. So much for smart suits and first-class upgrades.
Stuck with this stranger – who turns out to be not such a stranger after all – Sandy embarks on a whirlwind weekend zigzagging across New York. As inhibitions fade and heartbreaks surface, the initial animosity between two lost souls gives way to a surprising connection from long ago. Now, Sandy must decide if this unexpected adventure is the one she’s been searching for.
