Natalie Clark – “Iced Tea”
-There’s a simple melody at the heart of this song that feels familiar and engaging. The chill effect on Clark’s vocal makes the song feel intimate and connecting. If you’ve ever grabbed an iced tea and took a cruise, this song is absolutely relatable. What I love about the sound is that it has a coolness factor to it; I definitely enjoy thinking about people I used to know with this type of reflective style. The cool musicality balances the freedom of the lyrical reflection really well. I will definitely be putting this one on my alt pop playlists. It’s a chilled out tune that demands attention.
JOA – “I Don’t Want Nobody But Your Body”
-Well, this is a sensual song that shows hip hop slow jams don’t have a monopoly on sensuality in music. The sparing production features a piano and an incredible vocal on this one. It’s intimate, even a dash lusty, but ultimately is about desire and connecting with a lover. The little piano flourishes invite the listener in, while the lyrics express the sincerity of the loving desire. The chord development reminds me a bit of a musical theater production or a Dodie Clark song (same thing) and… honestly… I’m here for it.
Samfire – “Don’t Call Me Baby”
-There’s an understated quality to Samfire’s vocal in the quiet sections that just… mmhmm. It works. There’s also a catchy rhythm throughout the track that makes it absolutely stand out from the crowd. The lyrics repeat the title with a focus on a more mature connection in a relationship. It’s sultry and interesting, complete with some fantastic production choices. This is what alt pop is all about right here.
Here’s a working definition of alt pop for all who may be curious: Alt-pop, short for alternative pop, is a genre of music that blends the mainstream appeal of pop music with unconventional or indie influences. It often incorporates elements from various genres such as indie rock, electronic, or experimental music, offering a more eclectic, artistic, or non-traditional approach to pop. While retaining catchy melodies and polished production, alt-pop tends to push boundaries in terms of lyrical themes, sound, and style, making it distinct from more commercial, radio-friendly pop music. Artists like Billie Eilish, Lorde, and Tove Lo are often associated with the alt-pop genre.
