The Who’s Tommy‘s Ali Louis Bourzgui Will Star in We Live in Cairo Musical Off-Broadway
Taibi Magar will direct the new musical from The Lazours at New York Theatre Workshop.
Ali Louis Bourzgui, who made his Broadway debut this past season in the title role of The Who’s Tommy, will be part of the cast of the new musical We Live in Cairo this fall at Off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop.
Obie winner Taibi Magar (The Half-God of Rainfall) will direct the production, which will begin previews October 9 prior to an official opening October 27 for a limited engagement through November 24.
Joining Bourzgui in the cast will be Drew Elhamalawy (Cupid for Christmas), John El-Jor (Mean Girls), Nadina Hassan (Mean Girls national tour), Michael Khalid Karadsheh (The Ally), and Rotana Tarabzouni (Alien of Extraordinary Ability).
Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson Grant winners and NYTW Usual Suspects The Lazours (Daniel and Patrick), We Live in Cairo is inspired by the young Egyptians who took to the streets amidst the throes of the Arab Spring.
Winner of the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater, the new musical follows six student activists using their street art, photography, and song to overthrow a regime older than they are.
The upcoming production will also have choreography and movement direction by Ann Yee, scenic design by Tilly Grimes, costume design by Dina El-Aziz, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Justin Stasiw, video design by David Bengali, orchestrations by Daniel Lazour and Michael Starobin, vocal arrangements and music supervision by Madeline Benson, music direction by Mona Seyed-Bolorforosh, and voice and text coaching by Xavier Clark.
