To kick off Season 3 of The Story Behind the Song, The Cranberries’ drummer Fergal Lawler talks about the Irish band’s 1993 alternative rock classic “Linger.” But that’s not all, as Lawler is also joined by and CHVRCHES’ Iain Cook to discuss his recent remix of the tune. Listen to their insights above or wherever you get your podcasts, and watch a clip of the interview below.
Decades after its initial release, “Linger” remains not just one of The Cranberries’ most beloved songs, but one of the most enduring songs of the entire era — and with good reason. The lovesick, tender track perfectly encapsulates the emotional intensity of unreciprocated love, with captivating string arrangements and Dolores O’Riordan’s ethereal vocals cementing it as a timeless classic.
On this episode of The Story Behind the Song, Lawler chats about the history and legacy of the iconic song. Cook then joins in to discuss his remix of the song, revealing how the project came about and the process of reimagining such an indelible track. Both Lawler and Cook also touch on O’Riordan’s vocals, and how keeping them intact was a primary directive of remixing “Linger.”
“I’ve heard that song millions and millions of times and played it millions — well, thousands of times,” Lawler explains. “So, to hear this whole re-imagined, fresh, new version was just incredible. With Dolores’ vocal there, it was hard to put it into words. I think it’s something that she would have loved.”
