Meta Platforms’ virtual reality headset appears to have been a hit this holiday season, according to KeyBanc analysts.
Before Dec. 24, the Oculus app ranked as a top 10 iOS entertainment app only in the U.S. But after Christmas Day, the Oculus app jumped to the top five in the entertainment app category in 14 countries and became the No. 1 overall app in the U.S.
“Net, we believe Oculus was a popular gift this holiday season, and potentially benefited from console shortages,” the analysts wrote in a research note.
The app’s performance showed some moderation by Sunday, dropping to the No. 2 ranking in the overall U.S. app store, and remaining a top-five entertainment app in 11 countries.
Shares of Meta (ticker: FB), formerly known as Facebook, was up 0.6% to $337.27 in premarket trading Monday.
Enthusiasm over the metaverse has skyrocketed since Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms in a bid to become the driving force behind carving out this next iteration of the internet.
Parts of the metaverse already exist, in Meta’s Quest and Microsoft’s ( MSFT) HoloLens headsets, as well as in software platforms like Fortnite and Roblox. Apple ( AAPL) is expected to launch an augmented reality headset sometime next year, which one analyst predicted could be the “catalyst” for metaverse adoption.
