“Everybody Loves Somebody” Now Certified Platinum
On August 15, 1964, the music world witnessed a battle between generations. The “King of Cool,” Dean Martin, defied the odds and dethroned the “Fab Four” by sending his single “Everybody Loves Somebody” to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, knocking the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” from its perch.
This wasn’t simply a chart shuffle. Dean Martin returned to the top of the charts for the first time in nearly a decade (his “Memories Are Made Of This” hit #1 in January of 1956). In a playful jab at the young Brits, Dean told his son, Dean Paul Martin (of the group Dino, Desi & Billy), “I’m gonna knock your pallies off the charts.” He even sent a telegram to his friend Elvis Presley, saying, “If you can’t handle the Beatles, I’ll do it for you, pally.”
“Everybody Loves Somebody” became a cultural phenomenon. The song went on to become the theme for Dean Martin’s iconic variety show, “The Dean Martin Show,” which ran for a decade with over 250 episodes. The song’s lasting impact was further cemented with its induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The song’s message, immortalized on Dean’s grave marker (“Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime”), continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
In 2023, his global streaming numbers skyrocketed nearly 16%, bringing him close to 1 billion total streams. This year, he’s on track to surpass that milestone, cementing his enduring popularity. Even the social media world has fallen for his charm – his TikTok presence earned a Webby nomination in 2024.
And when it comes to holiday music, Dean is equally impressive. His version of the classic “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023. Impressively, the King of Cool holds the most-streamed version of five beloved holiday songs, proving his music’s timeless appeal.
To celebrate this historic milestone, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, in association with Iconic Artists Group, has released a brand new ATMOS mix of “Everybody Loves Somebody” today (August 9), produced by 4x Grammy award-winning engineer/producer Dave Way. Additionally, “Everybody Loves Somebody” was certified Platinum by the RIAA earlier this week.
