Albert Pujols is destined to be in both the Cardinals and Major League Baseball (MLB) hall of fames after he officially retires. Since the lockout is over and a new deal has been confirmed, the designated hitter (DH) will appear in both the National and American leagues. Some baseball analysts project, this is the perfect time for the Cardinals to reunite with their best player ever, Albert Pujols.
This would be a tremendous opportunity to view history in the making. In an ESPN interview a couple years ago, commentor and former MLB all-star Alex Rodriguez, projected that Pujols has the ability to go down in history as the “greatest right-handed hitter to ever play the game.” Such a comment accurately describes Pujol’s offensive capabilities; however, it is important to note that he is also a Golden Glove winner on the defensive side of the game.
In order to further cement his case as one of the best hitters to ever play, he needs to pass Alex Rodriguez on the all-time home run list. If he plays DH for a team, Pujols has a great opportunity to break this record by the end of the 2022 season.
The Cardinals can put Pujols at the DH for the entire regular and post-season. He is still a capable defender and would be the perfect back up first baseman alongside Paul Goldschmidt. Nolan Arenado is expected to start at third base. With Yadier Molina behind the plate, the Cardinals 2022 infield may be at the top of the league if they re-sign current free agent, Albert Pujols.
