It’s officially award season for all of our favorite fine and performing artists in the entertainment field! Even though the Screen Actors Guild Awards has only been around for a few decades, the ceremony has become a highly-rated event known for celebrating how creatives approach the arts on film and television. It was nice to see the event take place live on TNT and TBS, even though the world is still dealing with the global pandemic. There were some surprise winners and great speeches throughout the show.
Will Smith winning best actor for his role in King Richard was a bright spot during the evening. It took place toward the end of the ceremony, but it was certainly a great moment. There were only a few minutes of show time left for his speech, and many viewers probably would have wanted to see him onstage for a while longer. During his short speech, the attendees and the fans watching at home observed the inspiration behind the actor’s portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams’ father and his happiness to have shined a spotlight on two emerging young actresses (whom played the Williams sisters onscreen).
South Korean actress and model, HoYeon Jung, won the outstanding actress award for her role in Squid Game. She delivered her speech in Korean but there was a translator onstage to convey the words to the audience. She briefly discussed how she is an observer and fan of many of the people sitting in the audience. Her true emotions showed, she shined incredibly brightly onstage, and created a memorable moment for the SAG awards.
The 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards honored excellence in television and film performances.
The cast of Ted Lasso won for best television comedy, and Succession took home the award for best television drama. The cast of CODA delivered a win for best motion picture ensemble.
Marlee Matlin, the first and only deaf actress to ever win an Academy Award, made history at the SAG awards. She and the cast of CODA accepted the award for best ensemble motion picture. The film was directed by Sian Heder, and it featured a number of deaf actors. Matlin delivered her speech with an interpreter and proudly stated it was an honor to perform in a film displaying “deaf culture.” She solidified this point by saying “we, deaf actors, have come a long way.” Truly a powerful, groundbreaking moment on the SAG stage.
The incomparable Helen Mirren was honored with a SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
