Like Mother Like Daughter: Jen’s Quick Take

- But well-developed characters, a tense mother-daughter relationship, and a lot of suspects made this a very readable and enjoyable summer book!
Review of Like Mother Like Daughter With Spoilers
Cleo, a college student at NYU, isn’t getting along with her mother Katrina.
Kat doesn’t approve at all of Cleo’s sketchy boyfriend. As a former foster kid, Kat wants Cleo’s life to be better, and has a radar for people she thinks Cleo sould steer clear of. Kat’s also recently separated from her husband Aidan and is dating again. Cleo, as a teenager, wants none of her mom’s advice.
Kat convinces Cleo to come to her Brooklyn brownstone for dinner. But when Cleo arrives, she finds the house empty and dinner on the stove. What happened to her mother?
The best and worst part of the book for me is that a guilty Cleo decides to play amateur detective in a way that seems completely unrealistic, but still a lot of fun. She conceals evidence from the police in a way that would make Kat, a lawyer, throw the book across the room. Well, maybe not, as Kat is her law firm “fixer” who operates somewhat in the shadows herself…
Another positive of Like Mother Like Daughter was that there are plenty of suspects in Kat’s disappearance, from shady clients and colleagues to people from her childhood to her ex-husband.
In the end, I had part of the solution, but not all of it.
If you’re looking for a fun and readable suspense story for summer, Like Mother Like Daughter could be just the book for you!
