The award season is a wonderful time of year but it can sometime lead to surprising controversy. Over the last year, the top headlines regarding the Oscars were about the unfortunate “slap” situation occurring between actor Will Smith and comedian Christ Rock. As a result, this year’s ceremony had some changes. For example, all of the seating were a traditional setup like you would see at most proscenium theaters. This would drastically reduce the possibility of someone from the audience entering the main stage. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who was hosting the ceremony, had some standup jokes about how this year’s event would be much more secure than the previous one. Overall, the ceremony did not have much controversy and was received well by attendees and fans watching from home.
The 95th Academy Awards were held Sunday night at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Everything Everywhere All at Once, a sci-fi movie created by “The Daniels” (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) won most of the top categories, including best picture and directing. Michelle Yeoh, who starred in the film, won the best actress award, becoming the first Asian actress to receive the honor.
The best actor award went to Brendan Fraser for his role in The Whale.
Other standouts include: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio for best animated feature, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis winning their first Oscars for supporting roles in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Navalny for best documentary feature, Ruth Carter became the first Black woman to win two Oscars for her work in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and All Quiet on the Western Front, and Sarah Polley for best adapted screenplay-Women Talking.
