Ottawa-based Hot Mud reveals an enamoring pop and rock cohesion on new album Pink Cloud Pop, following up his successful debut Rehab Rock. Continuing to emphasize the healing power of music, within a hook-ready arsenal, Hot Mud excels with a consistently melodic charm throughout.
“Welcome To Humankind” opens the album with impressively dynamic qualities. “I’m stuck in between the real world,” the vocals let out, culminating in a title-touting ardency with contagious vocal reflections and bursting guitars into a lush bird-chirping ambience. A saxophone lingers onward as well, further emphasizing the colorfully melodic production. Another highlight arises in “Nobody Listens To The Radio,” where twangy guitars and jumpy percussive effects align with infectious cohesion; its alt-pop/rock engagement builds with satiating impact into warbled synth lingering at mid-point.
Album finale “The Best Life I’ve Ever Had” is another glistening success, weaving jangly guitars and reflective piano with a jubilant spiritedness. “Wasting away, on an ordinary day,” the opening vocals repeat alongside clap-laden percussion, whilst marveling at years that “quickly slip away.” It’s a replay-inducing send-off to an album from Hot Mud with ample quality songwriting and production.
