As states and territories around the world are beginning to open, many movie fans are wondering when will the theaters re-open and show new films?
Even though it was supposed to be released in the Spring, Disney’s live action version of Mulan has a new release date of July 24th.; it is unclear if movie theaters will be ready to operate by then. Disney’s preference would be for Mulan to be released as a summer blockbuster. For a film with a $200 million budget, the company knows that the movie’s release would generate at least half $1 billion at the box office. While fans would love to help that happen, the fact that cases of COVID-19 are still rising in certain parts of the United States and other countries, indicates that the film’s new release date is unlikely to occur.
If the movie is unable to make the new release date the company has two options: postpone the release of the movie until 2021 or release it on its streaming app Disney+. Each option has its own positives. If the film comes out in 2021 after a vaccine has mitigated COVID-19, it could be one of the company’s biggest releases ever. However, skipping the theater and putting the film on Disney+ would significantly increase membership, but would probably not generate the sales of a big premiere.
Even though the release date and platform are seemingly up in the air, the fans remain excited for the debut of the movie either in theaters or the streaming service.
