Happy September! As an Autumn girlie I am very happy that summer is out of the way (not that we had much of one) and I can start enjoying cooler days. August turned out to be an interesting month for me, reading wise. I read 12 books, most of which were 4* or above, but I did end up DNF’ing two of my most anticipated books. I did, however, manage to power through my TBR which meant that I was able to read more backlist books than usual, and the 7 backlist books I picked up ended up being some of my highest rated books for the month!
Non reading wise, August was a fairly quiet month for me. I had a few weekends spending time with friends and family, but I was trying to save my pennies for my holiday last week. I took my sister and nephew to Wales for a week, it’s the same place we used to go as kids and, thanks to it’s protected coastline, a great place to see dolphins. I do feel a bit glum because I haven’t made it onto a plane this year, so I might see if I can fit a cheeky, cheap trip in somewhere at somepoint.
Reading Update!
Well… I’m pretty sure I will be able to complete this in September, which will be amazing. I’ve kept my goal around the same mark for the last few years, even though I normally over achieve. It just means that I’m not in a mad rush at the end of the year to try and make books up. I also smashed my backlist goal by reading 7 books last month!! Two were re-reads for series I wanted to continue, but I just really enjoyed having the freedom to pick up what I wanted, instead of being tied into reading arc’s I had requested.

“Freddie rolls his eyes. ‘You mean for me to ask you out. You can’t flirt for shit.’ ‘Babe, I dropped spoons in front of you for an entire month just so I could bend and snap. It’s supposed to have a ninety-eight percent success rate of getting a mans attention.” – Katrina Kwan, Knives, Seasoning and a Dash of of Love.
“I’m sure to him, or any other outsider, it sounds like we hate each other, like we’re in some vicious fight. But this is a form of unconditional love. Of release. We gift each other the freedom to gnash our teeth, to growl and gnaw. Behave badly. Be terrible. Because We’ll love each other through it and no one else will. Because this ugliness is not permitted anywhere else. At least, not without consequence.” – Rachel Harrison, So Thirsty.
“Because being near you was like putting my hand to a licking flame, and I knew- I knew- being that close would thaw parts of me I’d let freeze over the many long years. You team needs you, yes.’ He paused, hesitated. ‘But Hakara, I need you too.” – Andrea Stewart, The Gods Below
“You think… we can’t match him?” Slick asked from her bed. “I’ve had three children…And some man whose never felt… his baby crown is stronger than me? Is tougher than me? He thinks he’s safe because he thinks like you. He looks at Patricia and thinks we’re all a bunch of Sunshine Suzies. He think we’re what we look like on the outside: Nice southern ladies. Let me tell you something, there’s nothing nice about Southern ladies.” – Grady Hendrix, The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires
“Who protects you?” he asked, not doubting her abilities but curious to hear her answer. It was brash, much like the captain herself. “The sea herself,” she said. “I am her daughter, and when I’m with my mother”—she exhaled gustily—“nobody fucks with her children.” – Rebecca Roanhorse, Black Sun
