MLB and Players Reach New Deal, Ending 2022 Lockout

Major League Baseball (MLB) owners and players reached a new deal under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which immediately ends the lockout as teams prepare for pre-season training and a 162-game 2022 season.

The new agreement passed with a 26-12 vote.

Before the deal had been approved, some owners presented demands in the information below.

The regular season will begin on April 7 and pre-season games are set to begin on March 17 and 18.

Here are the details below:

Competitive Balance Tax: no additional penalties for annual taxes for MLB players.

Minimum Salary: is expected to increase from $570,500 to $700,000.

Expanded Playoffs: the post-season will expand by 12 games and both leagues will feature a DH in the regular season and playoffs.

Options: players can be optioned to the minor leagues a maximum five times per season.

Service Time: bonuses and draft picks can be acquired for the top two rookies in the league.

Free Agent Compensation: Teams are no longer required to pay compensation for signing free agent players.

International Draft: if parties agree to terms by July 25, there will be a 20-round international draft.

New Playing Rules: new pitch clock starting in 2023, larger bases and restrictions on defensive shifts (2023), players can wear advertising patches on uniforms and helmets.
