I estimate, it would take endless listens to Michael Kentoff’s recent zig-zagging single “Bank Holiday Wknd”.
Regarding the initial inspiration for the track, Kentoff (The Caribbean) has said, “I love how jarring J. Dilla and DJ Rashid and a lot of Chicago footwork sound. I started to think if I can build songs out of guitar and piano, why can’t I do this with samples? I ended up putting two kinds of music I’ve never heard together, pop and footwork,”.
Hip hop, jazz, and avant-garde pop twisted, mashed together, and then churned out into the world as a sonic concoction you could reference to early Beck or the works of Calvin Johnson. But what is this funky song really about, you ask? Kentoff has also shared, “Phonetics won out on this one. I will admit I wrote it at a time when I had a lot of anxiety at work, and I was having these recurring dreams about being in school and always missing the same one class.” We’ve all been there, but very few of us have the mindset to create such a wild ride of a song. Kudos.
If you’re a fan of the inner workings of a studio wizard, then treat yourself and stream “Bank Holiday Wknd” here at the GTC.

“Even though I was an English major, I don’t care about words—melody is paramount—but the lyrics have to sound cool. Phonetics matter a lot to me.” – Kentoff
