Ma-Yi Theater Company Adds Michi Barall World Premiere to Upcoming Season
The production will bring audiences into the graphic novelist’s imagination with innovative technology.
Ma-Yi Theater Company has revealed its 2024-2025 season, or rather its remainder. Co-productions with The Public Theater (a New York premiere of Lisa Sanaye Dring’s Sumo, playing the Off-Broadway company in winter 2025) and HERE (Shayok Misha Chowdhury’s Rheology, running April 22-May 17, 2025, at The Bushwick Starr) have already been announced, but new to the company’s roster is a world premiere from graphic novelist Michi Barall.
Conceived by Barall and director Jack Tamburri, Drawing Lessons will bring Barall’s vibrant imagination to life on stage using innovative technology. The piece will track the creation of a graphic novel as its author deals with school, friends, and juggling her Korean heritage while living in America.
The production has been co-commissioned by Ma-Yi and Minnesota’s Children’s Theatre Company. Performances will run at the Minnesota theatre October 8-November 10.
“Thanks in no small part to our incredible institutional partners across the country, Ma-Yi’s 2024-2025 season promises to be one of our most ambitious and rewarding seasons since our founding 35 years ago,” says Producing Artistic Director Ralph B. Peña in a statement. “We are grateful and thrilled to be working with some of the most innovative theatres in the country, including Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis and our neighbors The Public Theater, The Bushwick Starr, and HERE, to present three vibrant plays that are expanding the scope of Asian American storytelling on stage.”
