Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk didn’t mince his words following his team’s disappointing 2-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park.
The Reds’ hope of winning the Premier League this season was dented by Everton who are pushing to stay away from the relegation zone.
The defeat leaves Liverpool trailing behind Manchester City and Arsenal in the title race, with Klopp’s side needing a significant improvement to keep their hopes alive.
Van Dijk on loss
Speaking to Sky Sports, as reported by the Sun, the Dutch skipper expressed his disappointment and issued a stark warning about Liverpool’s title hopes.
“[We’re] Disappointed in so many ways,” Van Dijk began. “I think everyone has to look in the mirror and look at their own performance and ask if they really gave everything. Do they really want to win the league?”
He continued, “But if we play like we did overall today, not winning challenges and giving the ref the opportunity to give a free-kick like he did many, many times, then we have no chance to win the title.”
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher shared his insights on the match and Liverpool’s season on Sky Sports, painting a somber picture for the Anfield faithful.
“It’s Everton’s night. You have to accept that as a Liverpool fan,” Carragher said. “It’s the end of the title run. They’ve just got to make sure they finish the season really strong now.”
Carragher acknowledged Liverpool’s missed opportunities and lack of clinical finishing, saying, “I don’t think it’s the time to get too angry with the team and Jurgen Klopp. It’s been a great ride but it’s Everton’s night.”
