Winter Street Gallery is pleased to present Paradise, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Lizzy Gabay, an artist we have just loved to see the works of over the past few months. On view from August 30 through October 6, this body of work delves into ideas about memory and the ineffable space that exists just before language takes hold. Through a distinct palette rich in both natural and lustrous tones, Gabay captures fleeting moments of movement and stillness, with each painting offering a glimpse into the poetics of everyday life.Â
Gabay presents familiar spaces – a barn, a washing machine, a staircase – as portals, or sites of potential transformation. Central to her practice is a sense of discovery, as she deftly navigates the spectrum of legibility, creating compositions where flatness, texture, and a sense of movement converge. Such elements lead the viewer through a landscape of emotional resonance, where meaning is often discovered in the periphery. Paradise invites viewers to step into liminal realms, capturing the transient nature of experience and the elusive shifts between presence and absence.
