With legendary status as a musician, singer/songwriter and performer, Joni Mitchell does not perform live very often at this stage in her career. However, fans had the opportunity to see her on stage last Sunday at the Newport Folk Festival-an annual folk music festival in Newport, Rhode Island. She joined Brandi Carlile on stage to perform “A Case of You”, “Carey” and “Summertime”.
“I wanted to be good, and I wasn’t sure that I could be,” Mitchell explained to CBS after her performance. “But I didn’t sound too bad tonight.”
She received a standing ovation at the concert. She last appeared at the festival in 1969.
Mitchell, now at the age of 78, has overcome some significant obstacles over the last several years. In 2015 she suffered from a brain aneurysm that required rehabilitation and physical therapy. Due to her injuries, she needed to learn how to walk again.
As she continues her recovery, the artist plans to make more public appearances in the future. Most recently, she made an appearance at this year’s Grammy Awards.
