Inventing Anna explores the journey of Anna Delvey but also the investigative journalist, Vivian Kent. This story exploded across the country catapulting Anna into the sort of fame she had only dreamed of, but was definitely ready to take it by the horns.
The story of Anna Sorokin or Anna Delvey, depending on which side of the fence you sit is a fascinating tale about a woman who was determined to make it for herself no matter how hard she tries or presents herself, depending on the situation.
Inventing Anna is another incredible series created by the remarkable Shonda Rhimes. But the story itself about the real Anna Delvey/Sorokin, that is what is so engaging about this series.
The story of Inventing Anna starts with Anna Sorokin going over what made her infamous, how she played some of New York’s wealthy individuals and was able to con them out of a lot of money to help finance her fictional lifestyle. But interestingly enough the question that does swirl around constantly, is would things have ended up differently if she was a man?
Anna Delvey and Anna Sorokin are basically the same person, literally Anna Sorokin pretended to be a wealth German heiress, Anna Delvey, in the hopes of securing finance for exclusive club that would have opened on Park Avenue. Through the right connections Anna was able to have doors opened for her at the top with a number of very wealthy influentials eager to help her achieve her dream, the only catch, she wasn’t a wealthy heiress with a frozen trust fund.
Inventing Anna is a glimpse into a world that is all about who you know, what you wear and how much money you have. When starting from the bottom and working your way up, a lot of people do some pretending to try and make it, that old saying “fake it until you make it”. Well that seems to be the idea that Anna Sorokin adopted and almost made it to the very top, but her world did come crashing down around her and was sent to prison.
Written by Shona Rhimes, Inventing Anna, is simply a well-rounded drama series that explores what it was like to be around the intoxicating individual Anna Delvey. Anna was desperately trying to convince the world that she had the skills, connection and power to make her dream come true, mind you it did involve conning a few people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Julia Garner as Anna Sorokin/Delvey is perfection. She is the incarnation of the real Anna Sorokin, the mannerisms and the behavior are flawless and that accent demonstrates at Julia Garner is a very talented and underrated actor who deserves the accolades that are bound to come from playing this role.
Inventing Anna, is at times a difficult series to watch, not because it is bad, but the opposite. It is a stunning portrayal of an intelligent individual who was determined and would stop at nothing to achieve her dream. All this pretending and make believe is very uncomfortable to watch, especially when you know the outcome.
Inventing Anna is currently available on Netflix.
