Incredibly, at just 17, THERA has mustered the courage to let listeners into her personal world, pouring vulnerable and complex emotional details onto each track. As she says, “Expression through music can help a lot of people understand and get through many difficult situations.“
On THERA’s just-released debut album I Wish I Called, the Czech singer also brings to the spotlight her strong vocal ability. She enlisted the services of producers Martin Prikryl, Matej Moravek and Matej Belko, who helped turn her stories into amazing songs.
I Wish I Called leans into bedroom pop. The album is sonically diverse, and will mesmerize listeners. I Wish I Called finds THERA seeking to cathartically get over the bad experiences from a past relationship.
The first track “ringing…” makes for a gloomy intro into the album, with the final track “dying tone” summing things up in the form of a voicemail note of the singer saying her peace. In between, we are treated to nine beautifully woven pieces.
The moody electro pop track “fate” captures the essence of the album, setting the tone emotionally. “erase” is equally as emotive, with pensive lyrics that are delivered in a talk-singing style. Musically, “erase” has hints of indie-rock.
The influence of rock music on this album is even more pronounced on “would you?”, a more up-tempo tune. With exuberant guitars and drums that come fully alive in the chorus, this song is just as rapturous as it is gripping.
Things slow down on “DLTTI” — at least in terms of tempo. The lyrics are particularly blunt and hard-hitting. On “YOUTH”, the singer reflectively delves into teenage angst, her soulful delivery making the song uplifting, just like the next two songs: “little favour” and “rain”.
“little favour” carries a bright, upbeat melody. The track’s production perfectly blends indie and electronic elements. On the other hand, “rain” is more guitar-driven, and evokes an yearnful feeling.
With its lovely piano melody, “stain” is such an affecting piece. It’s also one of the longest tracks on the album — alongside “DLTTI”, and the next track, “guardian angel”. These three songs are also quite deep emotionally. THERA really had things to say.
With closely-knit songs and a relatable narrative, I’d say I Wished I Called is a brilliant body of work. This album is expressive, candid and thematic. It underscores THERA’s praiseworthy musical attributes.
