Following the dismissal of Jorge Telerman as the director of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Julio Bocca has been named as his successor.
Bocca, a former ballet dancer, became part of the Compañía de Ballet de Cámara del Teatro Colón, before embarking on an major international career, including a stint with the American Ballet Theater as a soloist. He would eventually return to become part of the ensemble in the Buenos Aires theater. At age 18, he was a recipient of a Gold Medal at the V International Dance Competition in Moscow. He retired in 2007.
Per numerous news outlets and per the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, the former ballet dancer will team up Uruguayan Gerardo Grieco to lead the institution. Grieco was the general director of the Auditorio Nacional del Socre as well as the director of the Teatro Solís and creator of the Sala Zitarrosa. Per reports, the two are already working on a new plan for the Colón which they will present in early November.
Minister of Culture Gabriela Ricardes expressed satisfaction with the change noting that the new tandem has “demonstrated, in addition to their individual virtues, how to move ahead with a process that the Teatro Colón needs.”
