Falling for Christmas on Netflix has been heralded as Lindsay Lohan’s comeback after years of obscurity after a relatively spectacular fall from grace. Former child star Lohan gained notoriety in the mid-2000s as she became a party girl with the likes of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.Â
Â
For the last few years, Lohan has been keeping a relatively low profile in London and the Middle East, but now she has returned to her roots and taken the lead on her first feature film in a long while, Falling for Christmas.
Â
Falling for Christmas is a cheesy, camp Christmas romp, and it is good for all the right reasons. It is a cross between an over-the-top Disney movie and the story of a Hallmark film. But this film has adapted the idea of the story of Overboard but moved it to a Christmas setting.
Â
Sierra Belmont (Lindsay Lohan) is the daughter of Hotel Barron Beauregard Belmont (Jack Wagner). Sierra has everything she wants, a team of people who help her get through the day, a loving boyfriend who is also the top Instagram Influencer, Tad Fairchild (George Young).Â
Â
Tad and Sierra decide to go on a skiing expedition, and Tad’s underlying motive is to propose to Sierra. But as fate would have it, Sierra tumbles down a mountain and gets amnesia, forgetting everything about her privileged life, including her name. But luck would have it, a friendly local guy and small business owner, Jake Russell (Chord Overstreet), offers to help Sierra figure out who she really is just in time for Christmas.
Â
Directed by Janeen Damian, Falling for Christmas is a great cheesy Christmasy film that could quickly become a holiday tradition. It is a whole lot of fun. While it isn’t A Wonderful Life, it is a film that the entire family could watch, and there are moments abet a little silly, but very funny, which proves Lohan shill has maintained her comedy timing after all these years.
Â
Written by Jeff Bonnett, this film is literally Overboard transplanted into a Christmas-themed narrative. Spoiled rich girl Sierra Belmont has a skiing accident. She forgets who she is, along comes lovable Jake Russell, who encountered Sierra earlier on that day, when he accidentally spilled his hot chocolate on her red dress. Jake was meeting Sierra’s father with the business proposal to help his small business that had fallen on hard times. Fast-forward, Jake is taking care of Sierra, and Sierra is falling in love with a simpler life and Jake. Sounding familiar?
Â
Lindsay Lohan as Sierra Belmont is fun in this role. It isn’t a stretch for her acting abilities, but she can prove that she is still very good at cheesy comedy. The comedy in this film is reminiscent of her breakout role, Mean Girls. Lohan’s performance is engaging and believable, but also, there is a sense of maturity seeing Lohan in a role that could be seen as her return to the industry that she moved away from several years ago. Fingers crossed, more projects are on her horizon, as she was always a good actor.
Â
Falling for Christmas is a lighthearted, fun film for the entire family, and there is something for everyone. Glee fans will rejoice seeing Chord Overstreet, and Lindsay Lohan fans will enjoy Lohan’s return to comedy, and camp comedy at that, which does get you in the mood for Christmas.
