‘To Whom it May Concern’ is a song by American rock band, Creed, that was released as a single from The Scorpion King soundtrack in 2002.
The inciting incident within the lyrics concerns an argument that took place between the singer and his romantic partner. He apologizes for his behavior in the first verse. He also apologizes for putting unrealistic expectations on his partner. Even though they had the opportunity to talk things out, the singer still feels the partner’s eyes staring at him in the dark, perhaps covering up some unrealistic expectations of their own. The singer acknowledges the stares and hopes the intention behind them are not to restrict his freedom as an individual. The second verse is about the singer’s many attempts to make his partner happy, only to be let down by not receiving acknowledgement for his good deeds within the relationship.
The lead singer delivers a strong baritone voice throughout the song which has become a staple for the band.
The instrumentation arrives in layers. It starts with acoustic guitar and some live drumming, but as the song progresses it adds more bass and electric guitar to build extra musical layers.
Many of the band’s songs have a positive message associated with them. What makes this track different than the others is how personal the song sounds in regards to its lyrics and musical direction.
At its core, the song depicts a common scenario that listeners can relate to.
Even though the band is typically soft rock, there are some hard-rock elements to it that makes it unique. The song is important because it depicts situations that many people in relationships find themselves in, and the music may be enough to inspire someone going through a difficult relationship to remember to safeguard their freedom to express who they are inside.
