Art and Science Call

Imagine mathematical randomness in artwork may be critical to many contemporary processes, only if we would talk about gambling, cryptography, based on scientific research computer (in)security that raises questions about where is art in all this. But there is one thing that computers cannot generate and that is human creativity. We are talking about rather something that can be called artistic randomness, acquired from the environment, in all of its messiness. If we count unpredictability in the process, much as creative inspiration and scientific imagination in one product of a constant re-encounter with the world.

This particularly applies at Swiss CERN. This is the place where it explores the relationship between physical engineering, data analysis, and creative artistic procedures.

The art department at Swiss CERN launches a new call for Collide, in one fantastic residency program, in partnership with the City of Barcelona. Artists from all around the world are invited to submit their proposals for art residency research. An individual artist or artistic collective is to be invited to spend three months in artistic research and exploration between CERN and Barcelona.

Collide calls for artists inspired “by the processes of fundamental science and interested in interacting with the scientific communities at CERN and Barcelona“. It is about artists’ current practice open to physicists, engineers, IT experts, and laboratory staff, not just artists.

The selected artist or artistic collective will get a three-month residency award for two months at CERN in Geneva and one month in Barcelona. It is hosted at Hangar Centre for Art Research and Production in Barcelona. In the connection with the city’s scientific laboratories, the scope of the artist’s proposal should include time for research, in order to be developed at CERN and in Barcelona, where the artists will have the opportunity to expand via a scientific and cultural network. The program includes engaging with other art ad science communities.

The award includes 15 000 Swiss Francs for research and artistic production award, a personal fee for two months at CERN in Geneva, and one month in Barcelona. Travel and accommodation enter in a fixed budget for the three months of the artistic residency at CERN and in Barcelona.

The residency award will expect engaging in research based on the proposal submitted to the Collide Call for Entries. Artists would meet regularly with the CERN scientific partner(s) in the creative discussions of the process of artistic research and exploration and to work with other scientists, with the support and guidance of the team from the Institute of Culture of Barcelona (ICUB) and other scientific institutions in Barcelona. Artists will be delivering a residency report after finished residency, completed in both locations, within up to six months following the residency period.

The deadline is the 22nd of November 2021. The application should be written in English and submitted via the online form on CERN’s website. Artists should give professional data such as website, CV or detailed biography, project title, project summary, project description, project motivation, artistic portfolio, video URL etc…
