Captain Marvel – Film Review

Source: Marvel Studios

Captain Marvel stars a female superhero and is co-directed and written by women. This is unique because the majority of Marvel films depict the typical male characters as the central figures. Brie Larson plays the main character convincingly and with a lot of originality.

Most of the plot takes place in 90s. So, millennials will feel at home when watching this film. The younger generations may find it surprising to see telephone booths and other technologies that we no longer use today. The time travel element of the movie is used effectively and takes the viewer on a journey. It’s almost like Back to the Future with a twist of Marvel character development.

While the time travel component is significant throughout the film, it is also important to highlight how the character exist within the two worlds. Larson does an excellent job painting the portrait of the lead character in both worlds and establishes with the ensemble cast the reasons for her time travel and targeted adversaries. She is portrayed as a fighter both in words and in action which makes for great character development. She has to go to the past in order to figure out who she really is as a person and as a hero, she discovers that she was an Air Force pilot, which explains her knowledge of using space assets throughout the film.

The soundtrack is a brilliant collection of mostly 90s hits by female artists like TLC, Elastica, No Doubt and many others.
