The world of drag comes to Canada
Who doesn’t love a bit of glitz, glamor and camp fun?? Thursday night the winner of Canada’s Drag Race was announced with Priyanka taking the crown.
Canada’s Drag Race is another incarnation of the famed RuPaul series, following in the footsteps of the hugely successful RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, which introduced the world to the likes of Baga Chipz, Divina de Campo and the overall winner The Vivenne.
In this season we see the artistry of Priyanka, Rita Baga and Scarlett BoBo. Each incredibly talented and unique in their performances. The thing about drag is that no two artist are the same, each bring a different level of creativity to the stage and also to the competition. With each week you see some grow and develop as others fall away. Also keep an eye out for Lemon and Jimbo, two drag queens eliminated during the season but you’ll definitely see them in the future as they are entertainers.
The judges for Canada’s Drag Race include the famously flamboyant Brooke Lynn Hytes (runner up from season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race), actor and all round gentleman Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman and stunning fashion model Stacey McKenzie. Look out for guest judges Deborah Cox, Amanda Brugel and Michelle Visage, who through their critiques are ultimately wanting the best for these drag performers.
Canada’s Drag Race isn’t the first time the show has appeared outside the US. There are currently seasons being filmed in Thailand, The Netherlands, Australia and Brazil with previous seasons also in Chile. The success of the show just keeps on growing. As let’s be honest, Drag is just a lot of fun that is almost guaranteed a laugh.
The series runs for 10 episodes with each episode featuring a mini challenge and a main challenge. These challenges can range from quickly preparing make up or creating an outfit, improvising, highlighting their acting or dance ability or full walkway glamour with a theme. This is not the type of series for an amateur. The contestants on the series have years and years of experience and each week the challenges highlight the various drag queens expertise and skill level, some being better than others.
Priyanka has been doing drag professionally for only a couple of years, but definitely deserving of the win as she consistently grew as a performer on the stage and presented a very unique and distinctive type of drag that make her performances memorable.
Rita Baga called herself the Queen on Montreal. She is definitely a seasoned drag queen that has been performing around the traps for years. There is a sense of calm and control with her drag that only comes from years and years of hard work and dedication to the craft.
Canada’s Drag Race is a great series that highlights the creative extravagance of drag performers. It is a great platform that allows people to show their talent but also open up about their experiences as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It really is great to hear all their stories and realize that life is hard and we all are trying to do the best that we can, but drag makes it all that more fabulous.
Canada’s Drag Race is available to view on VH1, Logo and WOW Presents Plus.
