In one of the most shameful downfalls in New York political history Andrew Cuomo finally announced his resignation Tuesday from his Manhattan office.
Amid all the speculation of his sexual misconduct groping and sexually harassing and retaliating against 11 women in an investigation conducted by New York Attorney General, Letitcia James—the scathing report found evidence of Cuomo’s inappropriate sexual behavior and officials calling for his resignation or his impeachment—New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took an unexpected turn and finally announced his resignation Tuesday, August 10 from his Manhattan office.
Cuomo was originally determined to keep his job and not resign, but in a New York minute on the morning of August 10; he changed his tune. Did he realize he was guilty of his sexual misconduct that minute? Read my previous article on Cuomo here.
Cuomo will officially lose his title as Governor of New York in 14 days and current Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will succeed Cuomo and become the first-ever female governor of New York State.
Cuomo’s resignation before his term ends marks an ignominious end to his three-year run as a Democrat. His father, Mario Cuomo was governor for the full three terms.
“I think that, given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is to step aside,” Cuomo said from his Manhattan office on TV. “The impeachment process, he said would “consume government.” “This is one of the most challenging times for government in a generation, “Government really needs to function today, government needs to perform. It is a matter of life and death.” “Wasting energy on distractions is the last thing the state government should be doing.”
According to this report in the New York Post, Cuomo announced on Tuesday that it’s time for the government to do its job and not be distracted by impeachment proceedings.
The outgoing governor also commented that the impeachment process would cost taxpayers millions of dollars and will ‘brutalize’ people. He said the situation by its current trajectory, will generate months of political and legal controversy which is what we’re going to have. “That is how the political wind is blowing.”
Meanwhile, in a statement, the incoming governor Kathy Hochul commended Cuomo’s decision to leave office.
“I agree with Governor Cuomo’s decision to step down. It’s the right thing to do in the best interest of New Yorkers.” “As someone who served in all levels of government and next in line of succession, I am prepared to lead as New York State’s 57th Governor.” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that this closes a sad chapter for the Empire State. She thanks Governor Cuomo for his contributions to New York State and said it was an “important step towards justice.”
