“He might have chosen the wrong career…”
Award-winning actor Lee Jung Ha is struggling with his role in his latest K-Drama, The Auditors, according to the viewers.
The 12-episode show premiered July 6, 2024 (KST), and has been steadily increasing its viewership rating.
Corruption is rife at the affluent JU Construction, so the firm brings in a new auditing team to clean the company up. Heading this unit is the ice-cold cynic Shin Cha Il (Shin Ha Kyun), a specialist in hunting down white-collar criminals. However, his audit team members do not all share his deep distrust of humanity. The team includes new hire Goo Han Soo (Lee Jung Ha), a warm-hearted Gen Z employee who applied to join the audit team, thinking it might help him land a job in the United States. The duo immediately begin butting heads due to their wildly different world views. However, they soon discover that pitting their wits leads them to success. Can they form a bond of respect – and help purge corruption from the company once and for all?

Lee, however, has been somewhat unsuccessful in convincing the viewers of his character Goo Han Soo. Knowing Lee was cast after winning four different prestigious awards for his previous role in Moving, viewers had high expectations for Lee’s portrayal of the “Gen Z new hire.”
But Lee’s acting has fallen short of those expectations and viewers expressed disappointment in the underwhelming performance.
- “The Auditors is the first work I’m seeing him in, and I thought he was a complete newbie who was awkward around cameras. But it turns out he’s not a rookie…”
- “I got curious and watched the show, and while his acting isn’t amazing, it wasn’t so bad. I’m not sure he deserves to get hundreds of negative comments. His acting is mediocre. I think he struggles with emotional scenes. He stands out more because the other actors are too good, making his performance more noticeable.”
- “He’s terrible. He lucked out with the Bong Seok character in Moving.“
- “Even when he was Bong Seok, his tone and pronunciation sucked, haha. It seems like he was a good match for that specific character.”
- “He’s worse at being an MC than at acting. I wish he would stop hosting, sigh.”
- “Yeah, his acting is quite disappointing. It seems like he doesn’t know how to deliver emotion in his lines. Like, he might be tearing up for a scene, but his tone wouldn’t match the vibe at all.”
- “Is it that bad? I have no problem watching it without much thought…”
- “Ok, but if he has been doing this for 8 years, something is wrong with his pronunciation.”
- “He can’t even handle hosting music shows. He needs to work on the basics first.”
- “If this is his best performance at 8 years in the business… He might have chosen the wrong career.”
- “I thought he might be an idol-turned-actor. But if he has been around for 8 years, this is a problem.”
Multiple news outlets also reported on the public sentiment, putting spotlight on Lee’s performance.
…the controversy over Lee Jung Ha’s acting skills remains. Although there were expectations that his performance would improve alongside his character, Goo Han Soo, who matured throughout the episodes, it turned out to be unrealistic…
His awkward and exaggerated expressions have remained unchanged from episodes 1 to 8. With the stellar performances of veteran actors like Shin Ha Kyun and Jin Goo, along with several top-notch supporting cast and a solid script, The Auditors saw rising viewership. Thus, Lee’s (under)performance is even more striking, as it appears to be the only blemish on an otherwise perfect K-Drama.

There is just a couple of episodes left for the grand finale of The Auditors, so viewers doubt dramatic improvement in Lee’s acting. But, given how adored Lee was for his role in Moving, K-Drama fans hope he will fare better in his next project.
For Moving, the K-Drama that earned him four awards, Lee showed his dedication to the character with a weight gain that shocked the viewers. Read more:
