Kerry Williams is an emerging UK author and writer of magical romance, Other Nature being her debut paranormal romance novel and the first in a thrilling YA trilogy. Told from multiple points of view, it will keep you hooked with its twisty plot and boy obsessed.
Copywriter by day, she gets lost in a world of magic at night, either in her writing or in what she reads. Her creative roots are cultivated by the writing of the unforgettable Anne Rice, and she also adores the work of Erin Morgenstern, Holly Black, and J. K. Rowling.
She is an avid cat lady, die hard tea drinker and eternal stargazer. Always known to her family as a daydreamer, she and her young daughter, Ivy, can often be found looking at the moon.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! I’m Kerry, a writer from the heart of England. I mainly write romantic fantasy, which suits me. I’m a hopeless romantic, and my head is always in the clouds. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the urge to write. A distinct memory of mine is being praised by my year four teacher for my creative writing—that story was about a tiger!
I’m always writing! I’m lucky enough to write for a living, by day I’m a copywriter, by night, an author!
In my free time, I’m with my young daughter, Ivy. My favourite pastimes are ordering in restaurants, reading, and travelling the world.
What genre is your book, and what is it about?
Other Nature is a young adult romantic fantasy.
It’s multiple POVs and follows the mysterious Burke twins, new kids in a village where nothing ever changes, and Connie, a girl desperate for adventure. Peter Burke and Connie have one thing in common, neither want to be here. Connie longs for escape, while Peter would do anything for a place to call home. The two are drawn to each other, but Peter Burke has a secret, one which could threaten all he holds dear. The more Connie learns about Peter, the more she questions what is possible and finds herself wondering, what is he?
Expect first love, lots of mystery and twists, as well as nature-based magic. This book is perfect for those who love magical realism, it’s a fantasy but set in the real world.
What or who inspired you to write this book?
This book is actually inspired by a tiny moment in the 2003 film Peter Pan with Jeremy Sumpter. There’s this scene where Peter flies back to Neverland and the whole island wakes up. I was so fascinated by the idea of an individual having such an influence on the world around them, that Other Nature was born. Although it rattled around my mind for a long time before I started getting it out on paper.
If you look hard enough, you can still see those Peter Pan vibes through out the first book. Think dreamy window scenes.
What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
Firstly, write what you love, because you are going to have to read it at least a hundred times, so make sure you enjoy it yourself.
Also, when you are stuck, go back to basics, remember your premise, and get yourself back on track.
Writing a book can seem intimidating but remember, you’re not sitting down to write a whole book, just a little bit of one. Keep writing!
What do you enjoy most about writing and why?
Personally, I love drafts two and three. After the pain of the first draft, this is where the real fun begins. I make a playlist for every book I write, and there is nothing better than putting my headphones in and pulling the story apart and putting it back together. My best lines always come in the redrafts.
List three interesting facts about yourself.
- I’m a big stargazer. Aside from writing fantasy, I love learning about space, the planets, the stars. The universe is so big, there is something extremely comforting about being so small.
- I’m pretty much a crazy cat lady. I have a cat called Solo, and at least three cat tattoos!
- I’ve visited some pretty wonderful places in the world, Semuc Champey in Guatemala, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and Tokyo in Japan, to name a few, which took my breath away. In fact, book two of Other Nature, Gemini is set in the holy city of Varanasi in India. Although I visited over ten years ago, it’s left an impression.
What is your least favourite part of the publishing/writing process, and how do you manage this?
Querying is the worst! You have to be prepared for so much rejection. You really have to thicken your skin and keep going.
What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Leave a review! This is so helpful and free to do, especially helpful on Amazon and Goodreads to help with the dreaded algorithm!
But also, just talking about it is amazing. Tell your friends, shout about it on your social media, people buy from people after all. Word of mouth is invaluable.
If you are raving about a book, others will want to pick it up.
What is your next project?
I’m currently working on an adult romantic fantasy duology. This one is inspired by my love of Greek mythology, I’m positioning it as The Sixth Sense meets Greek myth but make it sexy!
It’s darker than Other Nature. Think Ouija, the occult, and Death as a love interest!
I find I’m starting to feel a pull between the lines of fantasy and horror. I think a future project after this one will be a horror romantasy. Maybe!
