Artists can posses a variety of interest and talents. Bentley Meeker is a visual artist and stage lighting professional who exemplifies creative versatility within the pursuit of the arts. He is an American artist who currently lives in Harlem, New York and works in Hell’s Kitchen.
Meeker’s approach to lighting goes beyond the juxtaposition between light and shadow. He prioritizes how lightening makes the observer feel when viewing a production.
In 2014, he created The “H” in Harlem, a public art installation at 125th St and 12th Ave. He was commissioned by Michelle Obama to create a light sculpture for the White House in 2016. Additional credits include works at the Harlem Arts Festival, Burning Man in Northwestern Nevada (developing the lighting for the Temple of Transition, Temple of Whollyness and Temple of Promise), works at the Southampton Center for the Arts, The Whitney Museum of American Art, National Arts Club, the CORE:club, as well as exhibits in Chelsea and SoHo.
Meeker is also the founder and president of Bentley Meeker Lighting & Staging, Inc., where he creates lighting for many types of events.
According to Meeker, the lighting design process possesses its own language. He believes his productions can enlighten others regarding the human soul. In NYWeekly, Meeker states, “I create art with light…everything that you see is reflected light. Most art I’ve seen is either reflected off objects or uses light as a source. I’ve always been fascinated by what it actually is.” Every aspect of his work has an intentionality. In addition to stage productions, his lighting has been seen at the weddings of Robert De Niro, Chelsea Clinton and Melissa Rivers.
