Live performance segments on the award shows are typically compact in order to have space for many different acts. In the case of the 65th annual Grammy Awards, the show was kicked off with a performance from Bad Bunny. Since his debut, he has become one of the most popular artists in the world. Bunny’s music features elements of pop, reggaeton, hip-hop and various sounds found in Latin music.
Bunny made history being the first all-Spanish opening act in the history of the Grammys. This milestone says a lot about the current status of American music. Today’s listeners appreciate many genres, more so than in previous generations. Unfortunately, there were a few celebrities who suggested that the performance needed English subtitles. However, most of the fans understand the importance of experiencing the music how it was created, and if they should want a translation, it’s easy to gain access to one on YouTube or Google.
He started off the performance with “El Apagón” from his album Un Verano Sin Ti. Dancers included the “cabezudos” or the “big heads” who carried on over a century of culture with their handmade full-head puppets that were created by fine artists. Each puppet honored legends like Roberto Clemente, Tego Calderón, Andy Montañez, Julia de Burgos and several others.
Bad Bunny’s second song was “Despues de la Playa”- a merengue and mambo fusion track.
Later into the ceremony, Bunny accepted the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album.
“It’s easy because I just made this album with love and passion, nothing else,” he said during his speech. “And when you do things with love and passion, everything is easier, the life is easier.”
“I want to dedicate this award to Puerto Rico, the capital of reggaeton in the world,” he continued. “I want to dedicate the award to all the legends and especially all the new artists, not just the legends, but also the new ones that are keeping this movement alive and refreshing it. To all the new talent, let’s continue taking this genre to the next level.”
Bad Bunny certainly has done just that. His music continues to climb the charts and he has become one of the most streamed artists ever. It is no doubt that his career will continue to flourish.
