Amazon MGM Studios is working on a limited series adaptation of the book A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii. The series follows the lead up to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, according to a report from Variety.
What do we know about the A Day of Fire limited series?
The series will be written by Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst, who will also serve as executive producers and showrunners for the project. The book the series is based on was written by Kate Quinn, Stephanie Dray, Ben Kane, Eliza Knight, Sophie Perinot, and Vicky Alvear.
While it’s unknown just how the series will go, the book follows a series of overlapping stories about the people living in Pompeii in the lead up to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The stories all focus on day-to-day life in Pompeii before its tragic destruction.
“Pompeii was a lively resort flourishing in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius at the height of the Roman Empire,” reads the official synopsis for the book. “When Vesuvius erupted in an explosion of flame and ash, the entire town would be destroyed. Some of its citizens died in the chaos, some escaped the mountain’s wrath . . . and these are their stories.”
Hirst is best known for creating the historical television shows Vikings, The Tudors, and Billy the Kid, all of which have been critically acclaimed, and the latter of which was renewed for a third and final season at MGM+. He also served as the writer for Elizabeth and was co-writer for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, both of which starred Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I of England.
