Denzel’s gifts have made us better I wish this man the best.

Denzel Washington revealed he did not cry at his mother’s funeral during an emotional interview on Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The 66-year-old actor appeared on the program to promote his upcoming feature, The Tragedy of Macbeth, before the topic of conversation changed to that of his late mother Lennis, who passed away at the age of 97 this past June.

The performer became choked up during several points of the sit-down, and bluntly told the show’s host: ‘This is terrible!…I didn’t cry at her funeral.’

The Training Day star made a point of noting that his mother had an especially long life and that he and his siblings were grateful for the time they were able to have with her.

He made a point of expressing that ‘she didn’t get cheated, nor did my brother and my sister and I.’

Washington then noted that the first time that he had experienced love was for his own mother.

‘A mother is a son’s, first true love. A son, especially that first son, is a mother’s last true love,’ he stated.

The performer then noted that he came to understand that assertion upon seeing his own son interact with his mother at a young age.

He remarked: ‘You know when I knew that? When I saw my son, John David Washington, handle my wife. I don’t care what she does, she’s going, “All right, baby.”‘

Washington also pointed out that Lennis was a constant presence in his life right up until her passing.

He notably stated that his mother ‘was there for everything and, uh, she went home.’

At one point, Colbert showed the audience a photo of the actor is accompanied by his wife and mother at the 1990 Academy Awards when he won the Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Glory.  the picture is above.

Washington became visibly emotional after the picture was shown and wiped several tears from his eyes.

The program’s host then quoted Sigmund Freud and stated: ‘A son who believes himself to be his mother’s favorite has a life long confidence that nothing can shake.’

The actor attempted to make light of the quote in his context and made it clear that he was not the easiest child to raise.

‘I don’t know if I was her favorite, I gave her the hardest time, I can tell you that,’ he said.

Washington concluded the sit-down by expressing that the audience members should ‘hug’ and show their ‘love’ to their parents.

According to Lennis’ obituary, she was born on April 4th, 1924, and grew up in Harlem after leaving with her family as part of the Great Migration.

She eventually moved to Mount Vernon, New York, where she met her eventual husband, Rev. Denzel H. Washington Sr, and they went on to welcome three children, including the actor.

The performer’s mother ran several successful salons after working as a beautician and retired in Rockville, Maryland.

Washington’s mother passed away on June 14th.
