Emma’s Fury by Linda Rainier brings to us the tale of Emma as she finds herself and vanquishes the evil that is all set to destroy the Fury and the world as we know it.
Review
“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”
Linda Rainier’s Emma’s Fury brings to us the story of the Fury themselves. Along with Emma, we hop on a rollercoaster ride full of suspense, action, adventure, drama, redemption, and love.
Eons ago, the three original Fury sisters, who were charged with maintaining order in the universe, became victims of a conspiracy and perished. Hades created a new order of the Fury and charged them with the judgment of all beings. This new order of women, though immensely powerful, has its own weaknesses stemming from the new Fury’s mortality. The Gyges were charged with their protection.
The tightly governed world of the Fury is ruled by the Mothers, Mei Li, Tatiana, and Agnes. Ever since becoming a Fury, Emma has always found herself out of place in the Hallow. She is unable to let go of the demons of her past life. Thought to be lesser than the others, she keeps to herself and tries to follow the rules. When David enters her life as her new Gyges, everything changes. Despite the strict rule against falling in love, Emma finds the walls around her heart crumbling. To make matters worse, something sinister lurks around the corner. Supernatural beings start falling dead out of nowhere. Even a powerful Fury succumbs to death. Mother Mei Li instructs Emma and David to investigate things in secrecy. Unbeknownst to them, the danger is much closer to them. Everyone is not who they appear to be. The very existence of the Fury and the world itself is in jeopardy.
Will Emma and David be able to uncover the evil amidst them and save the world? Will Emma let go of her past demons and embrace her true potential as a Fury? Most importantly, will she finally find her place in the world and give love a second chance?
Linda Rainier weaves the threads of fantasy and mythology with those of action and adventure to create a titillating tale. The book starts off with a bang with the origin story of the world itself. I love how she draws from Greek mythology to create the premise of the story. The way the tale transitions into the modern day is seamless. Rainier’s fantasy world of the supernatural is very easy to believe. It is not a stretch of the imagination to think a coven of Fury lives just outside our lines of sight. Every supernatural species, be it vampires, werewolves, satyr, or fairies, has its own distinct characteristics and history. Rainier portrays this beautifully.
All the characters in Emma’s Fury are well-developed. Emma is highly relatable. We can feel her centuries-old devastation at losing her husband and children. Her apathy to the world is palpable. This makes her affinity toward Sara all the more heart-touching. It is a treat to watch her break her barriers and grow. David is like a chivalrous knight. Like Emma and all the other characters in the book, he has his past demons. Yet, he does not let them control him. He is there for Emma even when she is not there for herself. The way he chips away at the walks around her heart is heartwarming. Mei Li is an enigma. She has many layers and I cannot wait to uncover them all in the next book. Olivia is strong and steadfast. She is a true action heroine. I really enjoyed the interlude with Bastian, Poe, and their vampire coven. Aiden and Bray surprised me with their valor. Tatiana and Celia are both well-developed characters who you will love to hate. Ambrose, on the other hand, is a different story altogether. He surprised me till the very end. I have to say I was truly intrigued by Thanatos. Despite everything he did, I somehow empathize with him, especially after knowing about his relationship with Megaera. The original three Fury, Tisiphone, Alecto, and Megaera, had a small but powerful role to play. I hope they have more of a presence in the next book.
Emma’s Fury is an action-packed novel full of twists and turns. It is one of those rare books that surprises you even in the end. I highly recommend Linda Rainier’s Emma’s Fury to fans of fantasy, Greek mythology, action, adventure, suspense, and romance. People who enjoy tales of redemption and self-discovery will love this novel.
