The Twilight animated series Midnight Sun has been given a straight-to-series order from Netflix.
It was first reported in April 2023 that a Twilight series was in early development at Lionsgate Television. Lionsgate’s Michael Burns confirmed the series would be animated in March 2024.
Now, per Variety, Netflix will develop the project and has given Midnight Sun a straight-to-series order. A release date has not yet been set.
What do we know about the Twilight animated series Midnight Sun?
Midnight Sun was published in 2020. Written by Stephenie Meyer (who also penned the other novels in the series), it retells the events of Twilight from Edward Cullen’s point of view instead of Bella Swan’s.
“When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella’s side of the story,” a description of the novel reads. “At last, readers can experience Edward’s version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger? In Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer transports us back to a world that has captivated millions of readers and brings us an epic novel about the profound pleasures and devastating consequences of immortal love.”
It’s currently unclear if Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, or any of the other stars from the Twilight Saga movies will reprise their roles in Midnight Sun.
Sinead Daly will serve as a writer and executive producer on the series. Meyer also serves as an executive producer alongside Meghan Hibbett, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Erik Feig, and Samie Kim Falvey.
