Tyler, the Creator has taken aim at his rap peers who are in the game for the money instead of the art.
In an interview with Maverick Carter for the sports mogul’s Springill platform, the Grammy-winning rapper and producer had some harsh words for some of Hip Hop’s new generation.
“I don’t want to seem like a hater,” Tyler said. “Sometimes I have hater energy because I just think I’m that good.”
He then added: “I love this art form so much, bro, and there’s so many n-ggas out right now that aren’t musicians that are getting treated like musicians because they make meme records.
“They’ll publicly be like, ‘I don’t give a fuck about music. I just do this shit for money.’ It’s like the Spider-Man meme of the next n-gga. When every publication is like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s put that out!’ Now you’re taking up space for n-ggas like me.”
The full interview airs on Friday (August 14) at 1 p.m. EST but a preview can be seen below.
This Wednesday, @tylerthecreator sits down with Mav Carter to discuss his unique approach to art and music, what he loves and hates about internet culture and why he owes Eminem an apology on the season finale of #Mavericks.

Despite being heavily criticized throughout his own career, Tyler, The Creator has previously spoken about his respect for Hip Hop and how much he loves being a rapper.
Appearing on Spotify’s RapCaviar Presents docuseries in 2022, he said: “I’m a rapper. I love that shit! It’s a beautiful thing. We’re good with words. We’re good with rhythm. We know pockets. We hear a collection of sounds and one thing and say, ‘Ahh, I know what could go over this.’ That takes a skill.
“We know narrative. ‘Oh, I know what you’re feeling. I know how to put that in words where you can understand yourself better.’ We’re great storytellers. Being a rapper is awesome.”
The Odd Future founder is also one to pay tribute to those that inspired him, as he did during his speech at the 2021 BET Awards while accepting the inaugural Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award.
“I wouldn’t be here or up on the stage or have this silly hat or anything without the Q-Tips, the André 3000s, the Chad Hugos, the Pharrells, theKanye Wests, the Missy Elliotts, who no one ever brings up,” he said. “Busta Rhymes, the Hype Williams who just took it to this different world. I preach those names and others that I didn’t name ’cause I’m limited on time.
“But I appreciate you so much for just opening the doors and throwing the key — not just opening the doors, but talking to young guys like me and giving me gems and things like that. Even LL [Cool J], the speech he gave me back there was just beautiful.”
