Is the iPod Obsolete?

Source: T3.com

It’s a strange idea in 2020 that one of Apple’s bestselling devices may now be obsolete. This has occurred due to the availability of music streaming services on smartphones and tablets rather than hardware that is specifically for music. Apple made its last iPod update in 2019, and has shown no signs of one coming in 2020. On many of the company’s websites the iPod is not even featured or is buried under several other tabs.

What is left to be seen is if Apple will create a new version of the iPod or not replace it with a new technology. In the early years of the technology, many consumers bought the iPod in order to manage and use their iTunes account and content. Since that program is now a part of Apple Music, which is one of many music streaming apps, consumers are buying fewer iPods and are considering music devices that are android based-which are usually less expensive than the Apple product.

The biggest change for the iPod came from the iPhone, which is also developed by Apple. 60% of the company’s sales come from the iPhone, which is a device that combines the features of an iPod with the ability to make phones calls, text messages and connect to an internet browser. Many former iPod consumers bought the iPhone instead, which is still a win for Apple and its sales.

It appears that Apple may not have any new plans for the iPod. However, there is still a part of the market that would be interested in buying the latest iPod. People who have a lot of media content on their smartphone may want to buy an iPod or similar device to keep their personal content separate from their business content. These are the consumers that use many gigabytes of data with a variety of media files; the iPod could be the perfect supplementary device for someone who has a lot of business and professional content on their smartphone, and they do not want to take the chance of sending personal content to their associates.
