Steven Spielberg directed the latest film adaptation of the musical West Side Story and he’s getting positive feedback.
Guillermo del Toro tweeted: “Spielberg made the camera dance.” He had many good things to say about the film and believes it may be nominated at the upcoming Oscars. There is only one week left for Academy Award nominations to be considered; Disney’s release of the film on its streaming platform occurred in enough time to expand the number of viewers for the show and potentially get more Oscar nominations.
Spielberg reported that he was a big fan of the original Broadway cast of West Side Story and the film adaptation. He considers it an honor to have been selected to reprise such an iconic production.
The film released in theaters last December. The production’s budget was $100 million. Unfortunately, it flopped at the box office, generating $10.6 million in its first weekend in the U.S. and going on to gross $38 million domestically and approximately $73 million worldwide. Disney is hoping to expand upon these numbers by connecting the film with millions of additional viewers through Disney+.
