Tony Awards Will Not be Televised in 2023

In the midst of the strike, the Writers Guild of America denied a request for a waiver to permit the broadcast of the Tony Awards. The ceremony was scheduled to stream on Paramount+ and air on CBS-June 11. The story was broken by The Hollywood Reporter.

The Tony Awards Management Committee and American Theater Wing petitioned for a waiver, detailing how the Broadway community depends on the event’s exposure.

The management committee is set to meet Monday to discuss how to move forward.

Two proposed solutions are to have an untelevised event or postpone it.

Industry analysts suggest the Broadway community would like to have an untelevised ceremony in order for productions to get their Tony awards, which can lead winners to prestige and higher attendance rates. Others have introduced the idea the American Theater Wing would prefer a delay.

Critics are saying that theatre is separate from the film and television industry, which should result in the Writers Guild granting a waiver.

The 76th Annual Tony Awards will take place at the United Palace in New York City. It will be hosted by Ariana DeBose.
