While Broadway had been shut down due to the pandemic over the last couple of years, the 75th annual Tony Awards were an opportunity to celebrate the re-opening of live theatre.
Broadway playhouses began to re-open slowly at the end of last summer. According to Variety, ticket sales for the 2021-2022 season reached $845 million, a 54% decrease from the $1.8 billion generated in 2018-2019.
Of the 39 shows that premiered on Broadway this season, 29 of them received at least one Tony award nomination.
A Strange Loop won best musical. The Lehman Trilogy won best play. Take Me Out won best revival of a play, and Company-best revival of a musical.
