Tones and I ‘I Made It’ Song Review

Music has a majestic quality that can introduce listeners to ideas they may have never considered before. It is like a tapestry woven with many layers of beautiful fabrics. A mixture of emotions and sounds that collaborate in ways that make us feel what the artist is saying. After listening to Tone and I’s new song, “I Made It,” the simplicity of each production element creates a song that gives the listener something to think about, feel and appreciate.

The song features clear, direct lyrics that tells a deeply human story. The notes played on the live piano throughout the song give it more of a personal touch. While the production starts out with the piano as its primary source of instrumentation, musical layers are added to the song causing it to sound like the production is building in a new direction.

At the highest point in the music, there is piano collaborating with drum machine, wonderful lyrics and vocals together, it’s the type of song that exudes ideas in a vibrant, creative fashion.

“I Made It” was released on Feb. 4 and is featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming Australian film True Spirit (2023).

Lyrics

When I was young, I tried to build a paper plane
But my head told me “no”
My parents sat me down and they tried to explain
That I had some time to grow
But I stayed up all night until I got it right and in the morning
I screamed, “Hey, look! I made it!”
When I was young, I tried to build a paper plane
But my head told me “no”

There are so many directions one can go in their lifetime. Most people are fortunate enough to experience a dreamworld in their younger years. However, sometimes reality may set in, or perhaps a naysayer will come along and try to convince you that you can’t achieve your dreams. No matter the scenario, it is important to keep building that plane, or space shuttle or whatever is captivating your imagination. While life has its ups and downs, holding true to your inspirations will guide you through.

But I knew I was special
And when I didn’t believe
I’d remember the moments when my family’s waiting for me
And if I had a dollar
From the ones that didn’t believe
I could sail away and live my life at sea

These lyrics suggest that love can help you through anything. Everyone is special in their own way and it’s terrible when others try to take those things away. The duality of being who you are vs. what people want you to become is like tightrope walking-it’s easy to fall if you don’t focus on each individual step. These lyrics also suggest that people with their negativity won’t go away. While you’re on the path of enlightenment in order to achieve your personal greatest, there will always be someone with ulterior motives, but believing in yourself and your ability to share your gifts with the world will overshadow them.

Sometimes I think about why we do what we do when
The world tell us “no”
These walls were made to break and I’m breaking through
At times it’s hard to show
And even though I’m scared, I know that I’m aware
That I’m exactly where I’m meant to be
So when I think about why I do what I do
It’s everything to me

When you find yourself tangled in the web created by unsupportive, jealous spiders of human beings, you can’t just wiggle your way out. You have to find some way to break through the confinements of the web. These lyrics suggests that the process isn’t easy but once you overcome it you can live your life the way you want instead of the spiders making the decisions.

Vocals

Tones and I has an excellent voice. While she usually sings pop music, her voice would sound excellent on any type of song.

Instrumentation

The instrumentation is a mixture of live piano and various sounds of the drum machine. The piano is the constant element within the song and it creates an excellent sounding musical foundation.

Performance

“I Made It” was released only a few days ago. There is currently no official music video, but there probably will be one since it seems to be a feature song for an upcoming film.
