The Weeknd continues teasing the final chapter in his current trilogy of albums by dropping evocative videos soundtracked with what appears to be new music, and the latest one may be the best yet.
The teaser, titled “Unprepared certainty…,” dropped on Tuesday (August 6). It features animation of what appears to be a young version of the singer in a house and in a church.
The YouTube comments are full of theories about the clip’s imagery and how it connects to The Weeknd’s previous work.
Check it out below.
The new video follows two previous ones within the past several weeks. “There Are Three Chapters To This Tale” dropped on July 18, and “The abyss gazes also into you…” showed up a week later.
The Weeknd has been clear that he is in the middle of a trilogy since early 2022, when he tweeted regarding his then-new album Dawn FM, “I wonder… did you know you’re experiencing a new trilogy.”
He made things even more explicit at the beginning of this year when he posted on X the cover art for his last two albums, 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM, followed by a question mark teasing a third and final installment in the trilogy. He also shared a “3” emoji in the post.
The Weeknd also retweeted a post from a fan account that read: “pain, regret, rebirth” with three different silhouettes of the singer, the most recent showing him as a child against a purple backdrop.
No release date or title has yet been announced for the album that will presumably conclude this trilogy. However, he did say in a May 2023 interview with W that he was “getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter,” and that “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd.”
It seems like The Weeknd will go out on a high note. He recently became the first Canadian artist to score a whopping seven Diamond certifications from the RIAA – as well as becoming the only the third artist to do so overall.
The feat was achieved the week of June 17 thanks to the songs “Save Your Tears” and “Die For You.” joining the list of his records that have achieved Diamond status. Only Post Malone and Rihanna are in the 7+ Diamond record club with him.
