The UK’s publishers of The Moth, Rebecca O’Connor, and Will Govan are looking for two-dimensional portraiture, figurative, or other representational work of any size – work that is courageous and suits with the aesthetic of The Moth, the art prize worth 1000 pounds must be contemporary and timeless. The event is brilliantly curated, with exquisite artwork and thoughtful writing throughout, if there is a much-needed time to regroup, and reflect on specific artwork, in order to come up with some new ideas, this competition is for you. The Moth Art Prize consists of €1,000 plus a two-week stay at The Moth Retreat, in the beautiful countryside in Ireland. The Moth Retreat features a large studio area, for work and living space. The space answers to a William Morris’s golden rule: ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’ €1,000 is awarded annually to a body of figurative or representational artwork. It is open to anyone (over 16) from anywhere in the world. Please submit a portfolio of images of 5–10 2D artworks, including figurative or representational paintings, drawings, and mixed media.
The Moth is a wonderful Irish publication, featuring fiction, poetry, and art from established and up-and-coming artists and writers from around the world. Artists whose works have been featured include Michael Carson, Wen Wu, Elizabeth Peyton, Hope Gangloff, Edgar Mendoza, Mary Sauer, Bradley Wood, Tran Nguyen, Robert C. Jackson, Lu Cong, Cesar Santos, David Piddock, Isobel Brigham, J. P. Donleavy, Mamma Andersson. A lot of credit should go to The Moth, always wonderfully idiosyncratic and beautifully designed, for launching the prize and responding to figurative painting, largely ignored by the contemporary art scene. The same magazine organizes the Moth Nature Writing Prize that aims to celebrate the art of nature writing. „It is awarded annually to an unpublished piece of prose or poetry which best combines exceptional literary merit with an exploration of the writer’s relationship with the natural world.“ The prize is 1000 pounds and it is open to anyone over sixteen, as long as the work is original and unpublished and a week at Circle of Misse www.circleofmisse.com in France.
Fee is 15 pounds per entry and the deadline is the 15th of September 2021.
