Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, Jim White and Emmett Kelly‘s new band the Hard Quartet now has music of their own. The group’s debut track for Matador Records, “Earth Hater,” is out today (July 30) in tandem with a claymation video directed by EYEDRESS and animated by Baby Cry Animations.
Sonically, the 2:12 tune falls squarely in the wheelhouse of its members other projects, including Pavement, Chavez, Ty Segall and the Dirty Three. The video seems to concern the perils of polluting our oceans, with a sentient plastic cup even making an appearance at one point.

The Hard Quartet has also announced its first live appearances on Oct. 11 in Los Angeles with support from David Pajo’s beloved Papa M project, Oct. 17 in New York with Weak Signal and Oct. 22 in London with opening acts Tubs. Tickets go on sale later this week.
Per Matador, the group will “tour extensively in 2025.” Malkmus and Sweeney spent the ’90s on the label with Pavement and Chavez, establishing themselves as two of the more compelling frontmen in indie rock. Sweeney also guested on Malkmus’ most recent Matador solo album, Traditional Techniques, which was released in 2020.
