Rebeca Andrade of Brazil won silver and Angelina Melnikova of Russia won bronze in a field that was missing the American superstar Simone Biles, who cheered on the other gymnasts from the stands. She did this for her dad and family.
Team USA’s Suni Lee won gold Thursday in the women’s individual all-around gymnastics final, defending the title despite the absence of the team’s reigning champion, Simone Biles.
An American has now won each of the last five Olympic titles.
Biles‘ decision to withdraw from the event in order to focus on her mental health loomed over Tokyo’s Ariake Gymnastics Center Thursday as the Olympics continued with one of its leading stars on the sidelines.
Lee, 18, was joined in the final by Jade Carey, who took Biles’ place, and came in 8th place Thursday.
Lee had the third highest all-around score during the qualifying round behind Biles and Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. Carey had the ninth highest score.
